Psalm 63:1-2
1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
Visiting preacher, Brother Killinger, preached from this text last Sunday, my pastor has preached from this passage before, and I have as well. As the Bro. was reading this text on Sunday, this thought came to mind that I want to share with you today.
“Where no water is” describes a place that is “dry and thirsty”. There is nothing to refresh you, to encourage you, to sustain you, or to nourish you. Water is an absolute necessity for human life. We cannot survive without water. I read that about one week is the longest duration that man can live without it. At some point, all our organs begin to shut down because they cannot function without water. So, “where no water is” is not the place to be. It is a place of sure death.
I believe this phrase represents a life lived without God. It is a place without spiritual water. There is nothing in the world to nourish your soul. It is a “dry and thirsty land,” and it will eventually take its toll on all who choose to remain there. Without physical water you die. Without spiritual water, you remain eternally separated from God, which is spiritual death. The world has nothing to offer that can sustain you, but God can make all the difference.
David declared that what he needed was “to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.” The Lord is the giver of life. In him, you will find living water, spiritual water, sustaining water, eternal life-giving water. The world offers all kinds of things but only produces death, but God offers life through the Lord Jesus Christ. We can thrive, even in a “dry and thirsty land” because Jesus is the Savior and sustainer. He made the way when there was no other way.
What fountain are you drinking from? The world’s fountain is dry. God’s fountain springs up forever. So, let us all do as the Psalmist said, “early will I seek thee”. Seek him now before this “dry and thirsty” place “where no water is” takes your life away.
John 4:10-14
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
