Growing
2 Thessalonians 1:3
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
When I got home last weekend from our trip, I noticed that even after a few days, I could tell the yard had grown. Typically, this would be expected, except that it had been so hot and so little rain at my house that I expected a few more brown spots rather than growth. That sent me to thinking about our growth as Christians. Regardless of the situation we find ourselves in, do we see ourselves growing our faith? Growing in grace? Growing in love towards one another?
We find in our text that Paul expresses profound gratitude to God for the Thessalonian believers, highlighting their remarkable spiritual growth. This verse touches on two key virtues: faith and love. Paul mentions that their faith “groweth exceedingly,” indicating a flourishing trust in God. This growth is not static but vibrant, reflecting their steadfast commitment amidst trials. Their faith, rooted in God’s grace, becomes a powerful testimony of resilience and devotion.
Equally significant is the “charity” or love that abounds among them. This love is not merely sentimental but active, demonstrated in their mutual care and unity. Think about the phrase “every one of you all toward each other." It indicates the depth of their compassion, binding the community together. Paul’s use of “aboundeth” suggests an overflowing, generous love that mirrors Christ’s selflessness.
This verse should challenge us today to cultivate a faith that thrives under pressure and a love that strengthens community.
God bless,
