Matthew 27:1-5
1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
I cannot imagine how anyone saw all that Jesus did, heard all that he said, and witnessed firsthand the character he displayed (like Judas had witnessed) and then still betray him for money. What would be the reason? It makes no sense. Luke 22:3 explains what happened to Judas but how can you be that close to Jesus Christ during those three plus years and not receive him? What could be so powerful to keep you away from trusting Christ? It is the exceeding sinfulness of sin. Sin is relentless and the power behind it (the devil) is relentless. The extreme wickedness of sin should never be treated lightly. Sin will cause us to make every excuse in the book but that is all it is: excuses. Sin allures us, then draws us, then entraps us. It clouds everything that is right and obscures our path to a loving Savior. Sin's influence constantly fights against anything that is godly and will attempt to justify this evil by deception. Judas saw Jesus without really looking at him. Everything was tainted by the influence of sin. When it came down to the end, sin won out in the life of Judas. Don't let sin win in you.
Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof
