Dec 15 Devotion: Homesick For Heaven

HOMESICK FOR HEAVEN!

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

Only God can make us homesick for a place we’ve never been.If you have been born again by the Holy Spirit and you live here on this earth long enough, down in your soul there are times you might find yourself saying…”I just want to go home”! With the trials of life and sickness…sometimes…or should I say MOST times…life is not easy.

When I was a little boy, I would go to stay at some of my friends’ house just for a night or two on the weekends. I remember vividly, my mom and dad saying to me when they dropped me off…”Lawrence, now you are not going to get HOMESICK and call us to come and get you in the middle night…are you”? In the moment, I really wanted to be with my friends, but as the night would go on…I would start thinking about HOME! I loved being at home with my mom and dad, there was NO place like MY HOME! Sure enough, many times…I could not take it any longer and I would ask if I could call home and have mom or dad come and get me. As a child of God, there are times I get that same feeling about a place that I have never been, but I know it is waiting on me! Hallelujah! There is a longing in my soul that can’t be measured…and that longing will not be satisfied until I am with Jesus in my Heavenly Home…Well Glory! Friend, there is coming a day when there will be no more pain, when suffering vanishes and the burdens of this life will be lifted forever. The tears of the broken will be wiped away by the Hand of Jesus. There will come a day when Jesus stretches forth HIS arms and says, “I’ve been waiting for you, welcome home”!

Praise the Lord for the day when our soul is at perfect peace and rest has finally come. On his deathbed, D. L. Moody described his call to come home. Listen to his words spoken to his son, Will; “Earth recedes, heaven opens before me. No, it is no dream, Will. It’s beautiful. It is like a trance. If this is death, it is sweet. God is calling me and I must go. Don’t call me back!” That does something for me down in my soul to know what is waiting for me when I close my eyes in death. What a trip that will be when we take our Heavenly flight!

In our text…I believe as Bro Paul was writing…he started getting HOMESICK for Heaven just like so many of us. Imagine for a moment, when the Lord calls you home…as your soul ascends upward and HIS Heavenly voice is beckoning you and calling your name. Here on earth…slipping from view will be every valley your feet have ever walked through, every trial, every storm the Lord has brought you through, every mountain the Lord helped you climb, every failure in this life…ALL GONE in a moment as your soul leaves this body to go HOME! What a beautiful and glorious thought! This is a reality for those who are saved.

My Christian friend, if you are HOMESICK FOR HEAVEN…this homecoming day is soon to be realized. On that day, it will all be finished! God will reveal HIS great power, and the Author and finisher of our faith will show us our new home. Today, may your soul be anchored in Jesus and in this hope we have that Heaven awaits. If your heart is heavy, it is because HOME is where your heart is! Set your hope in this…one day you will forever be with the Lord.
