John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Here we are on “the next day” after Christmas. As I looked at the above verse, I saw that John the Baptist saw “Jesus coming unto him” on “the next day”. I’m concerned that not very many people actually saw Jesus on yesterday’s Christmas day but that doesn’t change the fact that Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was lost”. (Luke 19:10) He can still reveal himself to you on “the next day”. He still came to “taketh away the sin of the world.” He is still the “Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) He still wants to be the “friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24) He is still the Savior who died for man’s sin that wants to be your Savior.
Today is “the next day” but it can also be the first day. The first day of a marvelous relationship with the Lord. The first day of a renewed commitment to serve him with your whole heart. The first day of a prioritized life that is based on putting Jesus first in all things.
Today is “the next day” but it could be the last day. The last day of opportunity. The last day before Jesus comes for his own. The last day to get in. Life is “a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14) so, this could be the last day before “the night cometh, when no man can work.” (John 9:4) Let us understand that “the next day” is today. We must take full advantage of today. If you are reading this then today has been given as a gift to you.
Hebrews 3:12-13
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Since “the next day” is today, let us use today to worship the Lord, to trust the Lord, walk with the Lord, serve the Lord, and represent him well. Today is a great day because “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24) Let us make every “next day” that God grants us a God-honoring day.
