Feb.12 Devotion: Valued or Valueless

Valued or valueless? Matthew 5:13-16 [13] Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. [14] Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. [15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. [16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

We see here a portion of Jesus’ preaching at the sermon on the mount. As Christians we should be the “salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” Do we live that way? If we aren’t doing His will then we have lost our value as salt and are of no use. If we aren’t sharing the gospel then we are darkness to the world. How do we lose our savour or hide our light from the world?

1. When we don’t share the gospel and explain our light. Matthew 28:19-20 [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

2. When we allow sin in our lives to dim the light. Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me :

3. When we don’t stand up for what’s right. Ever walk away from dirty joke or just stand and listen? Are we willing to speak up when someone uses His name in vain? Daniel 3:17-18 [17] If it be so , our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. [18] But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

4. When we go along with the world. Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

5. When we lack compassion for others Jude 1:22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:

Instead we need to: 1. Seek His forgiveness 2. Share the gospel 3. Stand up for Jesus 4. Show others Christ’s love that dwells inside us

Then we can be the salt with savour and a beacon of light for a lost and dying world.
