Feb. 9 Devotion: Does It Make You Better?

Does It Make You Better?

1 Peter 2:2

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Think about how many things we are told they are “good” for us. Take this pill and it will help your memory. Drink this everyday and it will help your blood pressure. Eat this everyday and it will help with your cholesterol. The world is full of things and advertisements that claim to help us in someway. That is all talking about food or drink. What about how we approach things we read or the people we befriend? When was the last time we sit down to read something and asked ourselves this question: Is this going to make me a better person? What about that new person on the job? Have we asked ourselves if they bring out the best qualities in ourselves if we are going to hang out with them. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying we should only read certain things all the time nor am I saying not to try to make new friends. It makes it easier to share the Gospel if we befriend people. However, we should think about what that person brings out in us before we become close friends so to speak. It’s also important for us to stay up to date on current events to an extent, but is that all we are reading? How much time do we put into reading things that can make us the best versions of ourselves?

Think of our text verse. Do we focus on things that lead to that growth? Do we focus on letting people in that help us grow and become the best version of ourselves? We might be better off with a smaller circle of friends. It might be best if we lay certain things aside if they aren’t making us the best versions of ourselves. As we allow certain people or things into our lives how often do we ask these questions? Does it make me a better spouse, parent, friend, person? Does it make me a better Christian?

God bless you today!
