Jan. 17 Devotion: We’re All Human, Right?

We’re All Human, Right?

1 Samuel 12:3-4

Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you. [4] And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.

I was reading a devotion earlier this week and came across a story. I tried to find that story and could not. However, I did find one similar. Nearly forty years ago there was an armored car that had its doors fly open dropping money bags into the road. After one car hit one of the bags people began to pick the money up. It was estimated that nearly 1 million dollars was lost. Only $100,000 was ever recovered. Even though there were some pictures of those picking up the cash they couldn’t prove those people left with it. However, there were some that were honest and returned the money. It was said that those that returned it were given 10% of what they returned.

Think of our text verses today. Samuel asked the people to give witness before the Lord if they had anything to show how Samuel was dishonest or had defrauded them in anyway. We see how they all answer. Samuel was known as a man of great honesty and integrity. The thing is Samuel was just a human just like us. He wasn’t made of anything different yet how often will we explain things away and make that excuse: We’re all human, right? I mean we all mess up. We try to just excuse away our actions. Is that what a Holy God wants us to do? Compare ourselves to others and make excuses for our actions? Of course it’s not. Are we one to exaggerate the truth a little to make a point? Do we find no harm in a little white lie as they call it? Would you return that money you picked up? Do others have confidence in you as a person that’s trustworthy and genuine or are you ok as just “another human?”

God bless
