Jan 30 Devotion: I’m Always Right

I’m Always Right

Proverbs 10:17

He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

Proverbs 15:5

A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

Proverbs 15:32

He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

As a parent, I’d say one of the things that frustrates us more than anything is when we try to give advice to our kids, and they don’t listen. Regardless of our experience, they still think they know best. Something that probably frustrates a parent even more is when they refuse to accept correction. You try to have a conversation about something they’ve done wrong, or maybe even you see them headed down a destructive path. They, however, want no part of that. They don’t like to be corrected or receive instruction in any way.

How do we handle that same thing as adults? If someone comes to you today and makes a suggestion to you about how they think you could’ve handled something differently, or points out something to you that you are doing wrong, how are you handling that? Heaven forbid if they point out a true fault we have! Our text verses give some pretty straightforward thoughts if we are to refuse instruction or reproof. There are times when the person pointing something out is by no means trying to sabotage or belittle us. They just might see something that our pride is keeping us from seeing. Oftentimes, we tend to have an attitude of “ my way is always the right way.” We often think that not based on facts, but just because it’s my way, so it has to be right!

How well do you receive instruction? What about constructive criticism?

God bless you,

Bro. Josh Richardson
