July 11 Devotion: Calling for Counsel

Proverbs 12:15 “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”

The world will tell you that if you cannot figure out the solution to something in your life, that you are incompetent. Society expects an instant answer whenever a problem comes to fruition. Even our closest friends, in the wake of shocking news, will often ask, “What are you going to do?”

Thankfully, God does not impose the expectations of the world onto His children! There is nothing wrong with falling at the feet of the Lord and proclaiming that you don’t have a clue what to do. There is no shame in realizing that you don’t have all the answers; that is, if you seek council to learn those answers.

If you came up with a solution to your problem, no one can successfully reason with you. Your mind is made up and you are blind to the flaws in your plans. Those who seek to forge their own path are destined to find the pits that so many have already learned to avoid.

However, a humble individual knows their limits and seeks to improve their understanding when faced with a situation to which they have no answer. These spiritual saints find the opportunity to gain wisdom because they realized that they lacked it.

There is wisdom in knowing that you are not all-wise. You will not ask for counsel from God until you realize that your knowledge is incomplete. Even if I am reasonably certain that I know the proper course, why wouldn’t I take advantage of the access to God that has been granted to me?

Counsel from God is the sustenance that my spirituality needs everyday in order to continue growth. The Spirit counsels all us time (during preaching, worship, daily study, prayer, in song, or in those still moments when no ones else is around); but, if I don’t look for that counsel I’ll be blinded by my pride and proceed with my own course.

Your fellowservant in Christ,

Bro. Jordan Foster
