July 24 Devotion: Examination

James 1:22-25

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Have you ever looked in a mirror at yourself and then just walked away without doing anything about what you saw? You may have been disheveled in appearance, but you just walked away the way you came. These verses above give the illustration of looking in a mirror, (“glass”) beholding your appearance, then going your way and forgetting what you saw. The mirror served no real purpose to you. Why did you look if you were not going to do something about what you saw? Your examination should have yielded some corrective action on your part.

The “perfect law of liberty” that is spoken of here in this passage is the word of God. It is like a mirror that will show us who we are. We are to look and see and then continue forward, working on what the word revealed to us. The examination is supposed to yield a result. It is foolish to look in the Book, have the truth revealed to us, and then go about our business without changing. We will remain disheveled in appearance and actions if we just walk away. Get in the word of God, let it reveal the truth to you, and then allow it to change you into the image of what God wants you to be.
