July 30 Devotion: Walking Humbly

Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

         This verse gives us some requirements that God has for us. I would like to zero in on the last one: “to walk humbly with thy God”. In recent days, I have heard the term “celebrity preacher” bounced around frequently and it strikes me as an odd characterization of what a preacher should be (or anyone else that claims the name of Jesus Christ). Any Christian’s approach to life should be a humble walk with the Lord. We have no claims of glory within ourselves. We are nothing without the grace of God. We deserve nothing but God’s frown because of our sin. But he showed us mercy on Calvary. He extended that mercy through the convicting call of the Holy Ghost to repentance and faith. Because of this, we have nothing to brag about or to draw attention to ourselves as if we were something to be applauded. We should not walk in pomp and pride but in thankfulness. We should take no credit, but we should say like Paul, “But by the grace of God I am what I am”. (1 Corinthians 15:10)  It would do us well to have our lives point people to Jesus rather than to have a “celebrity” attitude.
