Jun 25 Devotion: Call out the News

Luke 15:9 - “ And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.”

This verse is from the illustration of a woman who had lost one of her ten pieces of silver. Regardless of their monetary value, these pieces had great significance for this woman, for she was thoroughly rejoicing when she found the missing piece and restored the set.

Notice, that this woman lit a candle to search for the piece of silver, it was dark and likely a late hour when she started her search. Then upon finding her lost silver she strait way calls together her friends and neighbors. This was such a momentous occasion that people were willing to lose out on their sleep and nightly routines in order to properly celebrate the restoration of what was lost.

This woman called a celebration over finding a piece of earthly silver, yet how many Christians fail to call to others to tell them of something far more precious and valuable?

This woman lost a piece of silver, but man had lost his soul. She had access to light to aid her search, but the light of God had to come to lost man to show him his state. She had to search but a single house while man has searched for millennia across every corner of earth (and even beyond it) in search of what their soul needed.

Christians have received the most precious and valuable thing that can be imagined in all the universe: salvation. Yet how many people do we see calling out to neighbors to celebrate their pardon from sin with open rejoicing? We celebrate the mundane achievements of peewee football leagues more than most people rejoice in their salvation. We will tell any friend, neighbor or stranger of the joy of a child being born into the family but we fail to tell those same people of the joy we have over being saved.

We should be ashamed and repentant for the lack of effort we general put forth in joyously calling out to all those around us in an attempt to share our precious treasure. We have Christ, the chosen Lamb of God, the King of kings, Emmanuel. How much more precious than a single piece of silver is the Lord of all creation? How much more satisfying is it to rejoice in our Lord than it is to celebrate the carnal pleasures of this world?

So as people murmur about event in the Middle East, as they fear for the future and question what is to come, be prepared to rejoice in the fact that Christ is the lily of your valleys. That God sustained and satisfied you with something more precious than gold. Call the neighbors and tell them you have cause to rejoice despite the conflict in our world. You have Christ.
