Things Change Quickly

1 Kings 19:4

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

As I was mowing my yard yesterday, I was amazed at the difference from just the end of last week. Last week, with all the rain, the grass was thick and healthy. This week, while it might’ve been tall, wasn’t nearly as healthy. The blades of grass just didn’t seem as thick and healthy. While we’ve not had any rain over the past week, it hasn’t necessarily been hot. The week before, we had over 5 inches of rain, so you’d think that would’ve been sufficient for at least a week.

The same can be said of us if we spend too much time away from God or allow this world to steal our joy. Think of Elijah here. Just a few verses before, we’ve seen the prophets of Baal slain. Then we find a great rain falls after the time of drought. Now, in our text verse, we find Elijah under a juniper tree. All it took was a word from Jezebel, and Elijah finds himself wishing he would die. All it took was taking his eyes off the Lord and worrying more about what he was told Jezebel had said. It can happen that quickly. When we hear it preached to us about staying in the Word, spending time in prayer, and attending church faithfully, it’s not done just because the Bible tells us those things. The world can become overwhelming at times in an instant. It’s much easier to overcome those times when we are where we should be in our relationship with the Lord.

Things may be great for you today. That could all change tomorrow. So keep your eyes on Jesus, your nose in the Book, and listen to His still, small voice!
