Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
Thanks be unto God that Christ not only paid our sin debt with His own blood, but that such salvation also broke the bonds which shackled us to this world. It is an often overlooked blessing that we can stand in the liberty of Christ, meaning that our liberty is both steadfast and permanent. Oh, that I could fully comprehend how free Christ truly made us at the moment of salvation; but, some things are o vast for my finite mind.
Thankfully, the scriptures expound upon some of the facets of our liberty so that we may take advantage of the gift of freedom. We have been freed from the cost of our sin debt, sin’s eternal damnation, the grave, the sting of death, separation from God, the Law of Moses, the flesh’s power, the fear of eternity and so much more that we cannot truly comprehend this side of eternity.
As I was running and errand for work, I took a moment to look at the faces of those around me in earnest. So many of those faces bore expressions of exhaustion and relentless effort. The lost, and those saints whom do not choose to live in Christ’s liberty, are captive in bonds fashioned by this world. It is easy to forget the chains we wore before salvation included bonds that entrapped our mind. Before sin, there was no concept of a “tomorrow” or “the future.” Yet, after sin all that man (in his sin) is concerned about is the ever unknowable thing that happens tomorrow.
Sin will rob you of today in pursuit of a promising future. That future never comes. Sin will have your soul labor up to the point of death trying to change something you have no control over. Some do not even strive for a better tomorrow for themselves, but will work themselves to the bone to leave material or societal gain for those that come behind them. This bondage of the mind robs so many of hope, joy and life. Why do you think overdose deaths have skyrocketed in the USA over the past several years? Because those substances offer a way to dull the pain of what you went through today to help you get to tomorrow, or, they keep you from thinking about how miserable your tomorrow may be despite all your efforts to change it.
However, the liberty of Christ also came with clarity for the believer. I am no longer concerned with tomorrow, for I now know the God who holds tomorrow. I understand that tomorrow will be another day that God has made according to His will. I understand that the present is a gift from God that afford me the chance to make an eternal impact in the life of another. I see today as the day God made for me so that I could be an ambassador for Jesus Christ. If tomorrow comes, God will give me direction, so I shall not dwell on what I cannot change.
There is immense joy in understanding that my spiritual freedom gifted me with the present. I no longer dread my eternity, for I shall be where Christ is and I shall be like Him. Therefore, I am now concerned with what I can do here and now to live according to His will. Today is a day where I can learn more about God, learn more about what God would have me do, take advantage of doors God opens for me to share the Gospel with others, to help another saint by bearing their burdens. Today is mine, because God has set me free.
We can never praise God enough for the blessing of the clarity that accompanied our spiritual emancipation. Therefore, let us show our thanks and love towards God in the way that we live in each and every “today” that He gives us until we are called home. Let us not be as some other saints and fall back into the hazy mindless state of mind that we see in the world. Let us instead purpose to let Christ live through us so that we may truly possess that more abundant life that Christ desired to give us after our salvation.
Your fellowservant in Christ,
