Mar. 13 Devotion: Here’s My Excuse

Here’s My Excuse

If you look at today’s society, you’ll find a lot of people tell you that they are living for God. You’ll even have plenty tell you that they are Bible believers. However, how much do we believe and obey God’s Word? Think about it for a moment. The Bible tells us we should be in church, yet some will make excuses for why they can’t come. I’m not talking about if you are working, vacationing, or truly hindered from coming. Those that just flat decide to disobey the Word of God. You’ll have some give reasons for why they can’t tithe. They just don’t think they can afford to give back to God, or they just don’t see the importance. What about overlooking things when it comes to our family? It seems very easy to call things sinful when it comes to the world, but we will offer up excuses when it comes to family. Think about Peter for a moment.

Luke 22:33

And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

We see here Peter once again speaks before thinking. Jesus tells him next that Peter will deny him three times coming up that very day. However, look at what happens after Peter does exactly what Jesus told him he would do.

Luke 22:62

And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

Peter remembered what the Lord had told him, and it caused him to weep. He didn’t offer up excuses. He didn’t try to explain his way through something. He realized what he’d done and wept. We know what Peter went on to do. No doubt he got right and we know he was still used of the Lord.

Do we have any interest in getting right or just making excuses? What’s happened to conviction? Do we get over that conviction by just pointing to what others have done and therefore justifying our own actions in our heads? It is much better to follow Him rather than constantly make up excuses for ourselves or others. It will draw us closer to Him if we’d repent rather than try to explain or justify our actions. One day we won’t be able to justify things in our own minds. We will instead stand before an all-Holy God and give an account for all that we’ve done!

God bless,
