John 13:37-38
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
Sometimes, we think too highly of ourselves. We look around and see the wrong choices that people are making and say, “That will never be me.” Peter, (who seemed to be impetuous in many of his declarations) believed that he was the most loyal, the most committed, the most dedicated to Jesus and if anyone would stand up for the Lord, it would certainly be him. A simple look in the Bible at the life of a Pharisee would show that Peter was showing Pharisaical tendencies.
Luke 18:10-14
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Let us consider the admonition found in Romans 12 and humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, that through his grace we might be able to live a life that truly honors him.
Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.d
