Mar.27 Devotion:A Deeper Commitment to God’s Word

A DEEPER COMMITMENT TO GOD’S WORD

Proverbs 3:1,2,4,5,6 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

[2] For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

[4] So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

[5] Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

[6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

A few Sunday’s ago in our church, a young man stood in front of our congregation on a Sunday morning and quoted from memory verses 7 to 14 of this chapter. Our church and pastor were so proud of this young man. After I wiped away a few tears and praised the Lord for what we just heard, the Holy Ghost sat in my lap and began to deal with me about my lack of hiding HIS word in my heart. How many times do we hear powerful preaching with God’s touch on it or get into God’s Word and HE speaks to us, to lead us and yet we forget. The Lord directed me back to this chapter to reflect on the blessing of hearing HIS Word quoted and to this thought for today.

In this proverb, God is pleading with HIS children not to forget HIS teaching and HIS Word. Carefully note God’s Word to us in the first two verses of our text. The Lord gives us instruction and a promise. The Lord makes it so plain, and tells us here that obeying HIM is a matter of life or death. Not just in the physical realm but also spiritually. Sin will eventually take our flesh back to the dirt from where we came, but it is the Lord that can give us LIFE and extend our life and our days if we obey HIM. This truth is NOT up for opinion, this is God’s Word and promise to us. Hallelujah! God knows that keeping HIS word will bring life but forsaking it will bring death. If we forget HIS Word, we will not keep HIS Word. Remembering is likened unto keeping here in Proverbs 3:1. Oh that we would take more earnest heed to God’s Word when we read it, when we hear it preached and then keep it before our heart’s with all diligence as a guide for living; not for a road map, but for a life map. Our hearts are bombarded every day with things that try and pull us away from God and HIS Word. Our affection for HIM is constantly under attack and when we are carried away by the pull of this world, then we are put in danger of losing God’s peace, safety and blessings on our life.

God knows the power of our enemy far more than we ever will. That is why HE gives us HIS Word to lead us if we will only listen. The only way we are going to have victory is to make a choice and commitment to put HIS Word before us every day. To be determined to hear it, know it, remember it and hide it in our hearts so that HE would direct our paths every step of the way. HE’s pulling, HE’s urging, HE’s desiring HIS children to be in HIS Word. God used a young man to encourage me to make a deeper commitment to God’s Word. Today, I encourage you…will you answer Him today?
