May 16 Devotion: Prayer and Fasting

Prayer and Fasting

Mark 9:29

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Jesus has just cast a foul spirit out of a man’s son. This man had taken his son to the disciples. He says in verse 18 that they could not cast it out. We then see Jesus cast it out, and our text verse is the answer Jesus gave his disciples after they asked why they could not cast it out.

The response should give us some insight on what’s going to have to take place for us to see God do big things in our midst. Jesus let the disciples know that what was going on in this man’s son wasn’t something they could just say a few words and the foul spirit be gone. It was going to take prayer and fasting. Take a moment and look at the things of the world, and the things you truly desire to have. Those things take or took sacrifice. Long work hours, perhaps many hours of practice or gym time. You might’ve even cut certain things out of your life in order to have something you viewed as greater. Those great things we desired came at a cost.

Do we think the big things of God are any different? Do we not think they will come at a cost? That cost could simply be spending time in prayer and fasting. How much time do you spend in serious prayer for the services? How much time do we spend in prayer for Pastor and for his discernment for the services? When was the last time we fasted of anything and used that time being devoted to God in prayer for Him to do something big for us?

If we’d spend some extra time in prayer and fasting, there’s no limit on what God could show up and do in our services!

God bless
