False Teachers

2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

This verse is one that I’m sure many know by heart. Most could probably say it by heart. We know it’s important that we study. Not just important, but obviously it’s Biblical. We also understand the importance of rightly dividing. We can say, and rightfully so, that it’s important to rightly divide so that we know Scripture. We will give an account for what God has written one day, so it’s imperative that we know what the Bible says.

However, when looking at the context of this text, what does it say? Look at verse 16:

2 Timothy 2:16

But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

It’s important to know Scripture because we must know when we are being told things that aren’t true. The attack on God’s Word isn’t new. It’s been going on since the Garden of Eden. I believe what makes it worse today is the fact that it is so easily accessible. Paul’s letter here to Timothy shows us there were false teachings going on even then.  What they didn’t have though was YouTube, Facebook, podcasts, etc. We live in a time where everyone can have a platform. These platforms not only make it easier for false teachings to get out, but in turn make them easily accessible. Things can be packaged in a certain way that if you don’t know your Bible and don’t know the truth, it can lead you down a dangerous road. Most of the time, people won’t just fall into something false right off the bat. It’s the little nuggets they hear that they aren’t sure about and slowly continue down a road that leads them somewhere they didn’t intend to go. They will explain away a  little nugget like it’s no big deal until that leads them away from what God says about something. That’s why it’s important to study and rightly divide so that even if we don’t realize something is wrong at the beginning, at some point, the light goes off in our head, and we know something is just wrong.

Don’t allow false teachings to even begin to take hold in your life. Get in the Bible so you can shun the profane and vain babbling it talks about.
