May 8 Devotion: Slipping

Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
It is difficult to admit when we are wrong. It may be one of the hardest things that man can do. We’re certainly not good at it. It may be because we don’t get much practice. We’re good at pointing out the faults of others, but when it comes to ourselves, we would rather look the other way. The word of God would not address such things if man were not guilty. This verse in Hebrews 2 is a warning.
Letting things slip is the idea of something being anchored and settled at some point in our lives, but it has moved away (drifted) from where it was. When it slips, we view it as not as cut and dry as it used to be. There just may be a grey area there now in our minds. The reality is that the truth hasn’t changed but our perspective on it has. It is not that it has moved away from being true but that we have placed it in another category, and we have moved from it. Instead of being settled we are now slipping.
“For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven” is still in the Bible. (Psalm 119:89) “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” is still in the Bible. (John 17:17) We desperately need to get deeper in the Bible rather than further away. But things have slipped. Just look around. It is obvious. I’m not saying it is everyone. Praise the Lord, there are still some standing where they stood when they started. There are still some growing closer to God. But we see the prophesy of the falling away taking place right before our eyes. I have made this statement many times down through the years and I believe it still rings true. There is going to be apostasy in the last days, but it doesn’t have to be you and me. We need to “give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard” from the Lord and lock them down in our heart. When we see our attitude begin to drift, run back to Jesus as fast as you can.
