Oct 8 Devotion: Beyond Jordan!

Writer's picture: Immanuel Baptist ChurchImmanuel Baptist Church

John 1:25-30- And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 ¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

Here we find John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ preaching and baptizing.  As Jesus approaches, John shifts all attention off himself and directs them to their only means of salvation, the Lamb of God!  Jesus then suffers John to baptize Him, not because He was a sinner, but because He came to fulfil the Law of which John was the final prophet.  In verse 28 we find the place where this transpires; Bethabara, which literally means the two words that follow: “beyond Jordan”.

Beyond Jordan!

*beyond Jordan, there’s…

  1. A Foundation you can stand on!

  2. Field of labor!

  3. Fruit to harvest!

  4. Fountain of forgiveness!

  5. Fellowship that can’t be broken!

  6. a Future that’s eternal!

**beyond chilly Jordan, there’s…

  1. Rest!

  2. Redemption from the body!

  3. Reverence at His Throne!

  4. a Reunion with our love ones!
