Just Slow Down

Today’s devotion will be a bit different as I don’t have an opening verse that we will go off of. Instead, I want to look at something that became apparent this past weekend. Evidently, it’s Christmas. Yes, I know it’s not really, and this also isn’t to complain about the fact that it looks like Christmas in most stores you walk into right now. Stores always seem to stay a couple of months ahead at least. That also leads us to seem to always be looking forward and rushing around. Today I’d like to suggest we just try to slow down a little.

1. Slow down and see God’s blessings.

Psalm 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

We spend a lot of time thinking about what we need, want, or are waiting for. Sometimes we need to stop and actually count what God has already provided: family, friends, church, health, a home, another day, and most importantly, salvation.

2. Slow down and notice the people around us.

Philippians 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

We can get so busy completing our own schedule that people become part of the scenery. Someone around us may need encouragement, prayer, a conversation, or simply someone willing to listen.

3. Slow down and enjoy where God has you today.

Psalm 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

We’re always looking toward the next holiday, vacation, weekend, milestone, or season of life. Meanwhile, today is passing by. God gave us this day too.

4. Slow down and listen to God.

Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God…

Our lives can get so noisy that even our Bible reading and prayer become another box to check. Sometimes we need to sit with His Word instead of rushing through it.

5. Slow down and remember how quickly life passes.

James 4:14 …For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

There will always be another task waiting. But some opportunities, conversations, moments with our children or spouse, and chances to serve God won’t come around again.

We all need extra hours in the day and an extra day or two in the week. As the holiday season approaches and beyond, I’d encourage you to just slow down a bit and enjoy some of the special moments God may place you in.

God bless,

Bro. Josh Richardson
