Sept. 12 Devotion

AI

James 3:10

Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Our text tells us that it “ought not so to be.”  However, blessing and cursing often do proceed from our mouths. Not only our mouths, but also many things in this world. We could go through a huge list of things that can be used for good and bad.

One I want to focus on was mentioned in Sunday night’s message: AI. I wonder how many have no idea about AI and what all is out there that pertains to it.

First, it can be a great tool. It can be a very powerful tool. We’ve been able to use it in a business aspect to help better describe products. It can be used to do research somewhat. I say somewhat because that’s where we have to be careful. It is said that the more you use it, the more it can begin to learn who you are and give better answers or recommendations to you. However, it still has to start with what is inputted by people somewhere. We must not just think because it spit something out that it’s true. Too many can fall into the trap where maybe they’ve used one of these programs with no issues, so they just think whatever it tells them is truth. That’s when it can become dangerous. There are families suing makers of some of these programs because it told their teenage child to kill themselves. That’s wickedness put into these so-called bots. I saw the other day that a man who’d been married for years has created a bot that he talks to and is now his “companion” who he talks to every day as his way to get over loneliness. What’s happening to human interaction then? I’ve seen news clips that look completely real only to find out they are fake. Some of them it’s easy to tell; however, some it is very hard to distinguish. All that means we absolutely must use discernment when it comes to AI. It can be a blessing at times, but can also be a curse and a tool used for evil. It’s easy to say we shouldn’t believe everything we see on the internet. However, as it evolves and things look and seem to be more and more real, we must tread carefully and not forget that evil still abounds.

God bless,

Bro. Josh Richardson
