Titus 3:8-9
8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
We live in a world that is in desperate need of seeing the truth of God’s word lived out before them. They may claim they don’t need it, but the truth is they do. So, it is important to do some things consistently day after day. We need to “maintain good works”. “Good works” are only done through the power of the Hoy Spirit. These things need to be fresh and visible. The world needs to see biblical Christianity not false religion. Biblical Christianity exalts Jesus Christ, does not promote self, but points people to the one who can change their lives, forgive their sins, and save their souls. This lived out message is not the responsibility of the world, nor can it be. We that claim the name of Jesus must do it. We must “be careful” (to exercise a priority) in being consistent in an inconsistent world.
We also must be “careful” to avoid some things that are detrimental to the cause of Christ. There are many things that the devil will use to detour and distract us. If he can get us occupied with “foolish” things, then we are not effective in spiritual things. He revels in “contentions” and “strivings”. He wants to keep us occupied with unimportant things so that our lives will show no fruit. The Bible is clear. These types of things are “unprofitable and vain” which can be defined as useless and empty. There is no spiritual value to them.
I’m not trying to oversimplify this truth, but these two verses can be summed up by saying, “do what is right and don’t do what is wrong.” Don’t get caught up in the distracting allures of the world but instead, follow the Lord’s leadership so that “good works” may be maintained. Get this settled and put in practice (“affirm”) so that you can live for Jesus and have a testimony that honors him in all things.
