THE POWER OF THE MIND
Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Galatians 5:9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Philippians 4:7-8 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
[8] Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
When our thoughts are carnal or worldly this will always affect our attitude. You’ve heard the old saying, “one bad apple spoils the bunch”? In our text, Paul tells us “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Well, one bad thought can spoil the mind and will in the end hinder our walk with God. The power of the mind is not to be underestimated as we seek to honor the Lord in our daily lives as Christians. Just one wrong thought can open a door for sin, and disobedience. But just one right thought of truth can give us victory and cause our faith to soar above every situation. Truth saturating our mind can and will dispel the darkness. Our mind is the most powerful force we have complete control over. It drives our will, unleashes our emotions, raises up the lowly, brings down the strong, invites temptations, removes lust, or indulges in lust, captures fear and binds up joy. Our mind can alter what’s good and elevate what’s bad. The mind has the reign of our being and with it, our thoughts can steer us in the direction it is focused upon. Never underestimate the power of the mind. I remember growing up, when I didn’t feel well, or did not seem up to a task, my dad would always say to me, “son, it is all in your mind!” Now that I’m almost 40, I look back at all those times and realize the wisdom my dad was trying to impart unto me. Now I have come to know this truth, he was always right.
Because of the influence and strength the mind has in our life, we must guard it at all cost and nourish it with the truth of God’s word. The one and only boundary God gave mankind in the very beginning had everything to do with the mind. Man was not to take from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Did you catch the word, “knowledge”? What was God saying to mankind? Guard your mind! When the mind is protected so is the life. Whatever we feed the mind will bear fruit and fruit will bring forth a harvest from the seed within it. One unchecked thought, one course of thinking left uncorrected, can led to the complete downfall of any Christian; even if they are living in a perfect environment in the garden of Eden and walking with God.
What are you feeding your mind? What thoughts are you allowing to invade your life? Are you setting boundaries in your mind with your thoughts and feeding it things not pertaining to God and HIS Word? Whatever we feed our mind, our thoughts will give birth to character which will either be good or bad. If your thoughts today brought forth fruit, what kind of harvest would you reap? It’s my prayer for you today, that you would harness the God given power of your mind by reigning over your thoughts. Start today, and saturate your mind with those things that are true, pure, and holy and see if it changes your perspective on the world around you.
