SPIRITUAL WINGS
Psalm 119:2-3, 5, 9-11 Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
[3] They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.
[5] O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!
[9] Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
[10] With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
[11] Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
While sitting in my study and looking out the window, I noticed a great number of birds playing and looking for food. I took note that every time the birds were startled or in fear, they rose up with their wings and looked for a way of escape. It was absolutely fascinating to watch as they did instinctively what God had designed them to do. They had a built in defense mechanism just as all HIS creatures do, including you and me. It’s the part of God’s design given to HIS creation as a path of escape if met with a threat of any kind. When these birds sensed danger or needed a way of escape, they took flight with the wings God gave them.
God has given each of us “spiritual wings” of protection just like HE has to the birds outside my window. Instinctively, we protect ourselves in different ways. For some it’s retreating into a shell and allowing no one or nothing to come near. For others it’s exerting their own power through abrasive personalities, harsh judgments and even humor. Unfortunately for many, it’s in striking back with hurtful words or actions or demeaning others through slander and gossip so we can feel better about ourselves. And still for others, it’s riding on the wings of pride, elevating one’s own accomplishments before the eyes of others. We all have our fleshly defense mechanisms. Christian friend, may I ask you….what is your defense mechanism???
Our God given spiritual defense mechanism is HIS Word. God’s Word protects us, it delivers us, seals us, guides us, refines and purifies us; it reproves us, builds our faith, gives us wisdom and motivation to keep pressing on, it renews our hope and brings our heart peace and comfort, and it is mighty to save! Hallelujah! There have been times that I have felt like running and trying to escape the trials or fears that this life may bring. It has been in those times that I opened my Bible or went to God’s house and HIS Word was preached and exalted and God’s Word enabled me to keep the fire burning for Jesus! HIS Word is everything we need or will ever need to live in a way that is pleasing to God and it has the power to withstand the onslaught of the enemy. We are protected by the power of God’s Holy, infallible, perfect and eternal Word! His Word is our “spiritual wings” and they will never fail us.
Maybe you are at an impossible place or road in your life. You may be facing a divorce, living with the loss of a child or loved one, coping with a life threatening disease or an unfaithful spouse. Maybe there is a rebellious child out in the world that you are praying will come home. You may be a single mother or raising your grandchildren because you have a child who is unable to take care of them. Maybe you have an addiction that no one knows about or a secret relationship you are too ashamed to tell anyone about and you don’t know how to get out of it. You could be facing death or living in fear of something or someone. My friend, today take wings upon the power of God’s Word and let HIS Word lift you up to soar above your circumstances. Do not run or hide or take flight in fear, but mount up with
“Spiritual Wings” and take heed to God’s Word and walk in HIS ways and be victorious!
