Mar 12 Devotion: His Name Says So Much

Psalm 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

We are presently studying the Doctrine of the Godhead in the Bible Institute, and a part of this study is looking at the names for God in the Bible. Each name is a description of who God is and what he can do. They are very interesting and informative. For today’s devotion, let us look at Psalm 91:1 to see two of these names and glean the relevance to our needs.

The first name is translated as “the most High”. This is the Hebrew name El – Elyon. This name means that God is loftier than all else. He is stronger than the strongest and exalted above the highest; therefore, his rightful place is as sovereign above all there is.

The second name used in this verse is “the Almighty”. This is the Hebrew name El – Shaddai. This name describes his limitless power and ability to overcome all obstacles. The Hebrew word “shad” refers to the breast and speaks of nourishment and provision. No situation can overcome him and no need is too great that he cannot meet it.

Both these names for God are names of hope for the hopeless. We are unable to overcome life’s difficulties. The enemy’s attacks are too strong and relentless for us to ever claim victory. We are easy prey for the devouring lion that seeks us out, desiring to destroy us. (John 10:10; 1 Peter 5:8) But there is a God who is “able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think.” (Ephesians 3:20) He is “the most High”. He is “the Almighty”. He can do what we can’t. He can provide what we can’t produce. He can overcome the insurmountable. His power is greater than any foe. He cannot lose.

Our faith in God can never be a hopeless cause. There can never be a situation or circumstance where God would say, I cannot help you. He sits on the throne above all. In him, all things consist, (Colossians 1:17) and he bids us to call upon him. He is able to answer our prayers.

Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
