Apr. 17 Devotion: Trust in the Man of God

Trust in the Man of God

1 Kings 17:13

And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

Elijah’s words here carry a powerful lesson on trusting the man of God. The widow of Zarephath was facing starvation. She had only a handful of meal and a little oil left—enough for one final meal for herself and her son before they would die. Yet we see Elijah gave her a startling command: “Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.”

This instruction tested her faith deeply. Human logic said to feed her child first. Every instinct would be to protect her own family. But Elijah spoke as God’s representative. He called her to put the man of God before her own desperate need.

Her obedience was immediate. She trusted the word of the Lord through His prophet more than her own resources. She baked the cake for Elijah first, then prepared food for herself and her son. What followed was miraculous:

The barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah” 1 Kings 17:16.

This story teaches us that trusting the man of God often requires stepping out in faith even if it seems illogical. It means placing God’s priorities above our own fears and needs. When we honor God by honoring His servant, He will honor us.

True faith is proven when we obey even when the promise looks impossible. The widow’s simple act of trust opened the door to daily miracles. In the same way, when we listen to and obey the counsel of God’s anointed servants—pastors, teachers, or spiritual leaders who stand on the Word—we position ourselves for God’s faithful supply.

We can draw a few things from this widow. We see that we can fear not, obey first, and watch God provide. Do we spend more time honoring and obeying the man of God or questioning his messaging?

God bless,
