What God Sees

1 Corinthians 4:5

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

We live in a world where everyone is worried about appearance. Not just in how we look, but also in the fact that people see what we do, hear what we say, and often form opinions about us based on what is visible. There is something others cannot see—the motives of our hearts. Paul reminds us in our text that there is coming a day when the Lord will bring those things to light.   The things we thought nobody knew will be known. The motives behind our actions will be revealed.

That should cause us to examine ourselves. If we are honest with ourselves, there are times we can do the right thing for the wrong reason. We might serve in church because we want recognition. Some give because they want people to notice. We can preach, teach, visit, or help others while secretly desiring the praise of men. Some might not even be desiring the praise, but doing things to feel like they have control over it all. They have a “Look at all I do” attitude and feel as if that makes them entitled to something.

However, God sees beyond the actions. He sees the heart. We should desire to stand before Him with confidence. Not a brazen confidence, but a confidence in knowing that we served Him with a sincere heart.

Today, are you more worried about what other people think of your service or more about what God thinks of it? God sees the heart, and one day He will reveal it. Let your motives be as pleasing to Him as your actions appear to others.
