Aug 30 Devotion: What Happened To Humbleness?

What Happened To Humbleness?

Proverbs 16:19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Proverbs 29:23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

Have you ever heard anyone say these things?

I don’t care what it says, I’m doing it anyway.

I deserve it, that’s why I should get it.

What about people with just the attitude of entitlement?

What has happened to having a humble spirit? Being humble does not make one a welcome mat for someone to walk all over. It simply means not proud or arrogant. Humble can also mean courteously respectful. It amazes me how difficult it seems to be for someone to utter a simple thank you for opening a door. Some have become so filled with pride they give off an aura of arrogance. Others just refuse to accept that they are not always right in everything they think. They’ve adapted a, my way is the only way, mentality.

This is the same when it comes to God. We won’t say God has nothing to offer us, or that He don’t know what’s best for our life, but we live our lives as if He has nothing for us. The Bible lays out how we should live our lives, yet we’ll do what we want to do, how we want to do it, and when we want to do it. The Bible tells us His Word is profitable for instruction in our lives, yet we will turn to all kinds of things for advice before turning to God.

We can pull up multiple scriptures about God not blessing the proud. I’m afraid we’ve gotten so comfortable in our pride that we don’t concern ourselves with what we could be missing out on. We don’t even look at it as a lack of humbleness. Instead we just see it as how we live our lives. How many could we see saved, or what type of revival across our country could we have if Christians we just have more of a humble spirit?

God bless you today!
