The Old Red Hymnal
Deuteronomy 33:27
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
Have you ever found yourself in a conversation and after the person you’re listening to gets done you realize you have no idea what they are saying? You might not have intentionally ignored them, but your mind was somewhere else and you just realized you missed what they wee saying.
How much do we pay attention to the words we sing as we sing out of our hymnals at church? I found my mind wondering a bit as we sang this past Sunday evening. We were singing Leaning on the Everlasting arms! Have you ever thought about what that entails? When you lean on something you have to put your trust in it that it will hold you up. We aren’t going to lean over on something that will let us fall. Or do we? Are you leaning on Him or are you leaning more on your money, your earthly relationships, a career, or something else? The one thing we know will always hold us up is the Lord! God is our refuge!! Now think about what the song says we are leaning on: the Everlasting arms!! Those arms are the one true secure place we have for eternity. Even if we lean on any of those shaky things that eventually give way, those arms of the Lord are there to catch us! There is nothing that can completely destroy us when we take true refuge in His arms!!
So many things we trust in are fleeting and can be gone in an instant! Some of those things could be worthwhile and important. However, nothing should replace us leaning on Him!! As the song says: leaning on the everlasting arms makes us safe and secure from all alarm!!
God bless
