Feb 6 Devotion: Put No Fire

Put No Fire

1 Kings 18:23,25

Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: [25] And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

Jack of all trades, master of none. That’s a phrase I’ve heard many people say. I’ve even said on my job that sometimes the more you know, the harder you are to let go because you are so flexible on the job. While that flexibility can be good, there still comes a time when you want someone who is that master of their trade to do something for you. We had a bathroom remodel one time, and the person wasn’t the best at laying tile, and it showed. Think about it this way: you don’t want your dentist giving you advice on how to deal with high blood pressure or something.

In our text, we find Elijah knowing to stick with what he was to do. He instructed them to get two bullocks, cut them up, lay them on the wood, but then said to put no fire under it. When he does his, we know he has twelve barrels of water poured on it all, but puts no fire under it. Elijah understood to do what was his part, but leave the rest up to God.

How often do we want to try to do Gods part? We can’t save anybody. We aren’t bringing revival. We often see people moving for reasons that in their mind make sense, but God is not in it. There are things God equips us to do, but we then need to leave the rest up to Him. It will save us a lot of stress if we allow God to do His part. Elijah just prayed a simple 63-word prayer and let God do what only God could do.

Save yourself some stress and anxiety by just doing what you can and allowing God to do His part!

God bless,

Bro. Josh Richardson
