Jan 1 Devotion: Renewed By God

Psalms 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

This verse from the Psalmist, shows why America has not seen revival in over a century. Modern-day philosophy, and the humanism propagated by so many “churches,” teaches that any person can make themselves into whatever they desire. However, the psalmist makes it clear that only God is able to create a clean heart in the believer and to renew the RIGHT spirit which the Lord placed in that believer.

Proverbs 20:9 says, “Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure of my sin?” The rhetorical question obviously points out that no one is able to boast such things except one who is ignorant of God. IF we confess our sins, we know that He is faithful to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. However, the operative word in that verse is IF! We must never believe that we can rectify an unclean heart or replace an improper spirit within ourselves.

The only way that anyone has ever attained a clean heart and a right spirit since the fall of man is through faith in God and obedience to His instructions.

Therefore, if we desire to have a clean heart and possess the right spirit, we must humbly bow before the Lord and petition Him for both.

Furthermore, we must understand that this petition for cleansing and renewal is always needed in order to avoid fainting in the service of God. The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:16, “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.” The cause of Christ dictates that we faint not, our calling is too precious and our mission too important for us to faint. Yet, the strength to overcome the weary flesh is not provided by the believer. Such strength comes from the inward man, i.e. the new man, that was created by God at the moment of salvation. Therefore, if God created that clean heart and a right spirit, only He can maintain and renew it.

Revival is not a one-time event that spurs those affected onto everlasting zealousness for God. Revival is, instead, a daily occurrence that necessitates our petitioning for a clean heart and renewal of the right spirit from the hand of the Almighty.

Once this truth is understood, there is no barrier to God sending revival to the Church and there is nothing that can prevent it from continuing. That is, so long as we daily desire to be revived by God.
