Jan. 9 Devotion: An Also Christian

An Also Christian

Luke 10:38-40

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. [39] And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. [40]But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

One of the best ways to get recognition or promoted on a job would be to be that employee that goes above and beyond. I’m not saying it’s always the case, but more often than not, those that do more tend to get noticed. Those are the employees that do more than “just” their job. They are always looking to stay busy and seeing what else could be done.

Could the same thing be said about you in your Christian walk? Is your attitude that whatever it is you’re doing is enough? Do you seek out other ways to serve the Lord or are you content with just what you’re doing? It’s possible you’re doing all you can, and that’s a tremendous blessing. However, I’m afraid too many are content with just doing enough to get by.

Take a look at our text. We know the story of Mary and Martha and how Martha asks Jesus to get Mary to help her. In studying, you can find differences of thought on what “also” represents in verse 39. Some say “ also” can imply that Mary was sitting with others. I’ve also read that some imply Mary was also there while Martha was serving. I truly don’t know for a fact which, if either, is correct. However, I would like to look at it another way. Looking at the fact that Martha states in verse 40 that her sister had “left her” could imply that she had been helping to serve. However, Mary now also is sitting at his feet to hear his word. It’s not that she wasn’t doing anything. She was just now also listening to Him speak! She was doing more than just the serving that she had already done. She wasn’t stopping at what she had already done, but wanted to get all the way to his feet!

In a world with so much darkness, let us not get complacent in serving the Lord. Pray that we never truly think that whatever we are doing is enough!

God bless,

Bro. Josh Richardson
