July 26 Devotion: Heart Disease

Heart Disease

Matthew 15:7-9

[7] Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, [8] This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. [9] But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Did you know that 1 in 4 people die each year from heart disease. In 2015 it was the leading cause of death and in 2016 alone over 28 million people were diagnosed. Heart disease is something that can affect anyone at anytime. There have even been athletes who’ve died in the playing field from heart issues. This can happen because it’s a silent killer. Everything can seem ok on the outside, but be deadly on the inside.

What about when it comes to the things of God? We can profess God all we want with our mouths, but where’s our heart? Think about the things of this world that you may love or have a heart towards. If there is something you love to do, then you’ll do it as often as you can. If you have kids you have a desire to do all you can for them to see them succeed. You’ll desire to spend time with your spouse or significant other. You may even be someone who has a job that you love, and you don’t mind heading to work.

Do we have a heart towards the things of God? Are we burdened for the lost, burdened to see revival, or just burdened to get closer to Him? It seems to be a very common occurrence that we have those desires as a new Christian. Then over time we slowly get away from Him. We may still attend church, read our Bible, and do all the things on the outside that make it appear as if we are ok. God is more interested in what’s on the inside.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Have you allowed the things of this world to enlarge your heart, and push God out? Have you become hard hearted towards the things of God? Heart disease, untreated, can kill you. Do a TRUE examination and see where you are with God. If you find you are suffering from a heart that’s drifted, then return, and trust Him to heal it!

Jeremiah 3:22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God.

God bless you today!
