July 3 Devotion:What Held Jesus on the Cross?

WHAT HELD JESUS ON THE CROSS?

Psalm 91:4

[4] He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Isaiah 43:1-2 But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

[2] When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

It was one of California’s deadliest forest fires, and the firemen had bravely battled against it for days before getting it under control. The firemen had made their way to the top of a ridge when they came upon the lifeless body of a bird. This astonished the firemen as birds are not something they generally find among the remains of a fire. They could not understand why the bird had not flown away to safety when the flames drew near. As they lifted her burned, lifeless body, they found safely sheltered underneath her wings, three newly hatched babies. This is why she had not flown away. This is what kept her stayed upon her nest even when faced with death.

The love of a parent for their child is more powerful than any other force in the universe. It will gladly and unreservedly lay its life down for the child; for the love of a parent doesn’t count the cost, and it knows no bounds. This love will gladly do whatever it takes for the wellbeing of the child. All this mother bird had to do was fly away and she would have been saved from the perils of death, but she chose not to leave her babies. So she spread her body over them as a covering that they might live. My Christian friend, this is what Jesus Christ did for you and I on the cross of Calvary. When the perils of death and all of hell came against HIM, HE did not run, nor did HE hide HIS face from you. Instead He chose to spread out HIS arms round about you, and then stretched them from nail to nail and died in your place. Hallelujah!!! Bless HIS Holy Name!

No flame of hell could have moved Jesus from HIS place there, for the bonds of eternal love held Jesus on that Cross! HE could have came down from the Cross by HIS power, but instead Jesus stayed that you might live. From the foundation of the world God had a plan and Jesus came to fulfill the Father’s will. My friend, it was the love of the Son of God that took your sin, death, and hell on the Cross. It was there that Jesus safely put you under HIS wings, under HIS grace, and under HIS precious blood! You can run and take refuge there at the Cross. You can hide yourself away from every care, knowing that nothing and no one can get to you unless they come through HIM.

What held you there on Calvary’s cross, my precious King of glory?                           The song of love could never sing, nor the lips through sweetest story

In the midst of the midnight hour, my soul was made to shine,                         You whispered in that moment; “I am Yours and You are Mine.”
