June 21 Devotion: Blessed

Blessed

Matthew 5:3-12

[3] Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [4] Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. [5] Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [6] Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. [7] Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. [8] Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. [9] Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [10] Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [11] Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you , and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [12] Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

There are a lot of things we could look at here. We could look at some of the beatitudes listed here, or even other aspects of Jesus’ teachings in this chapter. What I’d like focus on is that word blessed. Blessed does not mean happiness. Too often we equate happiness with worldly prosperity. We tie happiness into laughter or things we see on the outside. Blessed has more to do with that hope and joy we experience on the inside. Yes, God blesses us with earthly things, but that shouldn’t be where our happiness lies. Knowing how much God loves us, cares for us, watches out for us, those are the blessings that we wake up with everyday! Those are the things that give us that peace that passeth all understanding and allows us to have that hope and joy on the inside. It’s that hope and joy that we can have regardless of how bad things may seem on the outside.

Are you blessed only because of the what you can physically see, or are you blessed because of what God has done for you on the inside?

God bless you today!
