June 5 Devotion: Like Your Life Depended On It

Hebrews 11:6 – “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Every person in the Bible, barring they were able to come on their own, that received a blessing, cure of an ailment, or was touched by Jesus (in His earthly ministry) had to freely choose to come to the master. The blind man who could not discern where Jesus was, but knew He was near, made a loud cry until the Master attended the call. The woman who touched the hem of His garment pressed through the multitude to merely graze the edge of His apparel. The centurion with a dying daughter left His estate and journeyed to the Jewish quarter in search of the Messiah. Time after time, person after person, they each had to seek out the Son of God.

We proclaim that we have faith, we may even boast in our access to the perfect Word of God and title of a Child of God. But how much do we believe? Each person that came to Jesus was desperate to reach Him. Nothing would have prevented them from getting to Jesus. Some had no claim to God, some had no ability to reach Him on their own, but all made sure that they got to Jesus.

Why? What caused them to so zealously petition the King of kings? They believed, without question, that Jesus was their only hope. They believed that He would reward their diligence in seeking Him, even though none of them were worthy.

Our verse does not say that God rewards those that deserve it, for we all deserve Hell. It says that those that come to God (meaning that they attain their audience with God) must believe that He is. That is to say, they believe that God is capable of whatever they are in need of, that He is God in truth. But also, they must believe that their faithful diligence search will be rewarded.

How many do not receive because they passively seek God? Because they only devote the scrap time that they have to seek after what only God can provide them? Where is the passion and desperate zeal in those that seek God?

If you believe that God is who He told us that He is, you are a fool to not devoted seek after Him. How many blind men were not given their sight because they didn’t seek out Christ? How many lame were left on their beds because they didn’t seek the one that they had heard about? How many fathers had daughters go to the grave because they would not leave their child’s bedside to seek out the one who is the Resurrection and the Life? How many diseases ran their course because someone was deterred by the size of the crowd and didn’t press through to Jesus?

If you truly believe, in the deepest part of your soul, nothing will deter you from seeking….. because you believe that God rewards those that diligently seek him.

Your fellowservant in Christ,
