May 21 Devotion: Come Unto Me

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

When I was in High School, I played in the school bands. Our marching band received an invitation from the President of the United States to play for him when he landed at the airport in Greensboro, NC. It was a campaign stop, and he was running for re-election. We considered it a high honor to be asked to do this. We prepared, was there when he landed, and played for the President. I doubt if after all these years later it is still there, but at that time we framed the Presidential invitation and put it on the wall in the band room.

Jesus is issuing forth an invitation in John 7. It is an invitation that far exceeds any invitation that could be given by anyone else. It is an invitation to come to him, and he would bless with spiritual blessings that only he could give. It is the highest honor that man can attain; closeness to God. Jesus made the potential of the invitation possible by coming to this world, giving himself as the payment for sin, and rising victorious over death. It is foolish to be offered an invitation of such magnitude and refuse to accept it. But that is what many have done. They may have their excuses, but the bottom line is that an invitation refused means the blessings are never received. To reject Christ’s invitation is to miss out on a wonderful relationship with the Lord. But it goes much deeper than that. To refuse the invitation is to find yourself at a judged distance from God. Salvation is only found in the acceptance of the invitation. Refuse it, and there is no hope.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
