May 23 Devotion: Abounding with Thanks

Colossians 2:7 “Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

The word abounding caught my interest for today’s devotion. To abound in thanksgiving means to possess thanksgiving in large amounts. While all of us could doubtlessly rattle off a list a praises of posed a question, how many of us are daily beaming with thanks and praise towards God?

As the church, we have the great responsibility to bear witness to the world of the grace shown towards us by God. The Word tells of what He has done and what He has promised to do, but Christians are meant to tell of what the Lord IS DOING.

Thanksgiving has the marvelous tendency to transform our wall, conversation, and thought process. It is infections. As such, if you’re truly thankful for what God has done for you it will impact the way you live. You’ll tell others, you’re walk will be unerring and you’ll have scores of reasons to chase away doubt while clinging to your faith.

The reason most of us aren’t abounding with thanksgiving towards our Lord is that we are oblivious to His influence. I do not physically get a reminder every day of the benefits with which He loads me. There is no app that alerts me to when grace or mercy has been shown towards me. Yet, I find in His Word all the promises which he renews towards me each day; I find examples of how He has given the same types of grace that are evident in my past and present; and, I find how many blessings are beyond my comprehension that I truly won’t understand until I reach the golden strand.

He is God. There’s no shortage of blessings to be thankful for. There’s only my inattentiveness towards them and my apathy in embodying my thanksgiving for them.

Your fellowservant in Christ,

Bro. Jordan Foster
