May 3 Devotion: If Not, Not If Then

If Not, Not If Then

Daniel 3:17-18 [17] If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. [18] But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

Our pastor mentioned this portion of Scripture in preaching on Sunday morning. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego were faced with a situation I’d dare to say we’ve never faced. They knew God could deliver them from the fiery furnace. Even if He didn’t they still were not going to worship the golden image or other gods. I’d ask today: Deep down in your heart are you a if not person or more of an if then person? I don’t believe any of us would verbally tell God that if He meets whatever need or request that we have that then we’d get closer to Him. However, how do we live those statements? When we are burdened with something how quickly do we get to God? We will be broken, and just want to get as close to Him as we can. However, what happens over time when that request isn’t getting the answer we desire? Do we lose that burden? Do we drift away from that brokenness we once had? Do we still spend that same time with the Lord even “if not?” Or instead does our heart show that we are more of a: As long as things go our way then we will worship Him type of Christian? Do you have any burdens you’ve left behind because instead of just worshipping Him regardless, even “if not”, you had an, “if then” type of attitude?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
