Swift To Hear, Or Swift To Speak?
James 1:19-20
[19] Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: [20] For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
A very familiar portion of scripture that we find very difficult to follow at times. Not just at times when we may be mad or upset at things, but even in just our every day walk. How many times a day are we faced with an opportunity to listen, and instead we choose to speak. We seem to value our own thoughts and opinions so much that we rarely want to listen. It’s possible we are standing in front of somebody as they are talking, but many times instead of listening we are already formulating everything we want to say back. We are not truly listening to what they have to say. There are things that we can gain by listening instead of being so quick to want to speak.
We can gain wisdom by listening. Sometimes we have that person placed in our life that can articulate something to us that we might otherwise find hard to understand.
We can gain a different perspective on things. We have reached a point in society where we just believe that how we look at things is the right way. We never take into account other peoples view. We have a I’m right , and you’re wrong approach.
We can also gain others trust by listening. Are you that friend others come to when they need someone to listen? Do they come knowing you are just there to listen, and not to judge them? Do they come knowing you aren’t looking to just interject your own thoughts into everything?
Pay attention to how you act thru the day. Watch even how others act towards you, because that could give you an indication as to if you are more swift to hear or swift to speak.
God bless you today!
