Nov 27 Devotion: Sin’s Progression

Sin’s Progression

Luke 22:56-60 [56] But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. [57] And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. [58] And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. [59] And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. [60] And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

We all know of Peters denial here. I want to take a look at the progression of it. In vs 57 he states he don’t know Jesus. In vs 58 he says he’s not one of his followers, and then in vs 60 he acts as if he don’t even know what they are talking about. How often does that happen with sin in our own lives. What seemed to start out as harmless can slowly or quickly evolve into something far greater than we had ever intended. I’ve seen people start out just missing a service every week or two. Then one a week. Before you know it they are out completely. I’ve seen family start out small getting hooked on pills only to become an addict and lose their life. It’s never the intent to allow things to go this far, but that’s how the devil can play with our minds. We think just this one time isn’t gonna hurt. Then it snowballs into something far greater. I don’t believe any addicts ever wake up and decide that’s what they want to do with their lives. It’s a steady progression. A lot of the people that used to be in church are the same way. Something was more important once, then again and again, then life just became more important than church. Have you ever been completely devoted to your daily devotion, then miss a day or two. All of a sudden you’ve gone a week without doing it. It’s easy to allow sin to slowly creep in and take over before we know it. Don’t allow yourself to get caught up in sin today. What may seem small today can become huge tomorrow.

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
