Nov. 7 Devotion: A Friend, or That Friend

Proverbs 18:24

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Being a true friend requires intentional effort and a heart open to connection. To have friends, one must embody friendliness—showing kindness, empathy, and genuine care. This means actively listening, offering support in times of need, and celebrating with others in joyous times. A friendly disposition invites trust and fosters bonds that withstand life’s challenges.

Think of being a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. This kind of friendship is built on mutual respect, shared values, and unwavering presence—through triumphs and trials alike. It’s the friend who shows up when others fade, offering comfort without judgment and encouragement without expectation.

Being a friend, then, is an active choice. It involves vulnerability, as true connection requires authenticity and openness. It demands forgiveness, as no relationship is without flaws. Above all, it calls for selflessness—putting another’s needs alongside your own. In a world marked by fleeting interactions, what would happen if we cultivated deep friendships? By showing ourselves friendly, we not only gain companions but also create bonds that mirror the steadfast love of a friend who sticks closer than family, enriching our lives with meaning and connection.

Today we seem to expect these things out of others, but then fail to reciprocate. Are you that friend to someone else? Are you that person that someone knows they can count on in their most difficult times? Are you “a” friend or “THAT” friend?

God bless you,

Bro. Josh Richardson
