Oct 23 Devotion: Paul’s Life of Service and Suffering

2 Timothy 3:10-11

10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

The Apostle Paul was a man that was on constant public display, either by living a life of Christian character or suffering through the persecutions of living for Jesus. He accentuated the positive by his witness while enduring the negative. You did not have to guess what side he was on. No speculation was necessary. He stood for Jesus through the good times and the bad. He did not fluctuate in his faith even though he was often assaulted by his enemies.

Paul knew how important it was to believe in the right things. His doctrine was biblical and God-sent. His manner of life pointed people to Jesus. He described his purpose when he said in Philippians 1:21, “For to me to live is Christ…”. His faith remained steadfast when it was tested constantly. He was “longsuffering” when dealing with people that opposed themselves. He showed a giving type of love through his commitment. His patience kept him pushing forward to be a positive spiritual influence.

Those who teach that living for the Lord will always be an easy road (prosperity doctrine) have not looked at the life of Paul. His life was filled with persecutions and afflictions. He represented the Lord in a world that hated God, and he was fought against at every turn, but that did not detour him. He stayed at it because the Lord was his protector and deliverer. God gave Paul the strength for the journey. He believed living for Jesus was the most important thing in the world.

Let us examine ourselves. Is our observable life representing the Lord in a way that brings honor to God? Are we an example to the world of what a true Christian should look like and act like? When difficulties come, do we give in or go forward? Paul showed us the way, and the Lord will give us the strength. Let us live our lives for the glory of God.
