“Having Perfect Balance”
Text: (Luke 10:38-42; Proverbs 11:1)
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
(Proverbs 11:1)
1 A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.
I want to share my heart with you today. In the Word of God above, we clearly see two very different approaches by Martha and Mary. However, both are absolutely necessary if we are going to live a Christian life full of God’s blessings. On one hand, we know that we must be busy about the work of the Lord with our hands, and our feet in service to the Lord as HE opens doors for us to minister. On the other hand, our work and our service and our ministering, our preaching, and our witness will NOT have God’s touch, if we have not been sitting at the feet of Jesus! If our heart is not seasoned with time at HIS feet, our WORK will be lifeless, and well WORK.
Finding the balance between loving the Lord Jesus with all my heart, and meeting the demands of this life, have been one of the great challenges of my life. I want to give my Lord every ounce of my being, knowing I find strength at HIS feet, as did Mary. How to love HIM supremely, and be a dad, a husband, work a corporate job, and preach God’s Word, this my friend can get very complicated IF there is not a balance. Just like many of you reading this, the Lord has given me a beautiful family, they are God’s precious gift to me. Since I love them dearly, I want to spend every moment of this life with them! There is a balance, a weight that works, one with God’s hand, and one that is PERFECT! There may be times serving the Lord, when we feel overwhelmed, we get cumbered about like Martha, we get busy serving, it is always a blessing to be busy about the Fathers business. However, there are times when we need to pause and BE STILL, reevaluate our schedules and make sure, are we in balance??? Here is the key…
Balance your duties, and let not one press out another. We are to take care never to present one duty to God that is half-hearted or done out of haste. We are to balance and proportion our different forms of service, so that our life-work may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Truth lies between two extremes, and man, like a pendulum, swings either too much this way or that. The right way usually lies between two extremes: it is the narrow channel of your love for the master and the demands of this life. Never break the balance of holy emotions and sacred duties; let us have our love of God and our great joy; but, at the same time, we must not sit down because we have great joy, but we must run on the Lord’s calling, leading and direction for our lives. We should work with the hands of Martha, but yet keep near the Master with the heart of Mary. Today, may you be completely devoted to our Lord, have great joy and peace and still have “Perfect Balance” in your life and walk with HIM!
