THE GOODNESS OF GOD
Psalm 31:1-5, 7, 9, 12-14, 16, 19, 24 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.
[2] Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.
[3] For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.
[4] Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.
[5] Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.
[7] I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;
[9] Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.
[12] I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
[13] For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.
[14] But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God.
[16] Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies’ sake.
[19] Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!
[24] Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.
What a Psalm and Word from the Lord we have today in our text! If you just read the text and stop there and believe what you just read, when you are finished rejoicing and shouting I know you will be encouraged to make it through the rest of your day, Hallelujah! David shows us here his great confidence in God and praises the Lord for HIS goodness. How does one measure this kind of greatness and goodness as is described here in God’s Word? When the trees move and give us a breeze, where is the holding place of the wind and how can I capture it so it cannot escape again or return back home from whence it came? I tell you this, physical wind and spiritual wind come from Almighty God, Praise the Lord! Who could count the grains of sand upon just one beach line out of the thousands that exist upon this great earth that God made with HIS Hands and spoken Word? Is there a man or woman who can take one star out of its place in order to move it to another? Can even the greatest of doctors mend a broken heart? How far is the farthest point in our universe and who has been there before to know that it is the ending place? Who instructs the Eagle to stretch out its wings and fly high up into the sky? They say, that a newborn turtle will immediately head to the water without any instruction from its mother, who tells it to do that?
Just think about your life before Jesus stepped into it and saved you and changed everything. David knew he could trust HIS God because the Lord had delivered him time and time again and was his solid Rock where he could always stand. David knew that his never changing God had a love for him that also would never change. The Lord was his defender in time of trouble, place of refuge, strength, redeemer and Great Shepherd to guide his feet. The Lord was the healer when his heart was broken by others and circumstances of this life. Oh that we all would have this unending wonder that we should approach God in this way, with this attitude of thinking of HIM every day. David was full of faith, in awe and at a loss for words when it came to describing the goodness of God. By the time we get to (verse 19), David is wrapped up in the goodness of God; and from the depth of his heart with his awareness of God, he says…
”Oh how great is thy goodness.” In other words, he ran out of WORDS to try and describe how good God was to him!
When was the last time you took the time to reflect on all that God has done for you and blessed you with? When was the last time the thought of God and HIS goodness and the mere mention of the name of Jesus took your breath away? Have you been at a loss for words concerning your love and gratitude for God? Take the time today to appreciate the goodness of God just for who HE IS! Then give God the praise for all HE has done for you every day since you met Jesus. It’s my prayer you find no words to adequately express how you really feel down in your heart and soul. Our God is great and yet HIS goodness is greater still. The smaller we are, the larger HE becomes!
