Sept. 1 Devotion: Preaching

Preaching

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

One of the things Bella and I enjoy doing during spring and summer is going to tractor pulls. I enjoy any of the diesel trucks or tractors and Bella enjoys it as long as they go down the track fast. She don’t like any antique stuff that is slow. While we have the things that we enjoy at each pull there is still the our favorite part that we go for. I’d venture to guess we all have that activity or hobby that has a certain part of it we enjoy more than the rest. I enjoy cooking. I don’t enjoy the cleanup afterwards, but I enjoy the cooking part. What about when we come to church? Do we have things we enjoy more than others? Where do we place the preaching of the Word in the hierarchy of what goes on? How important is preaching to us? Do we look at it as the thing we need most or do you view it as something you have to sit through so you can say you went to church? We’ve heard about special singing just sitting the table for Godly preaching. Do you look at it that way or would you just prefer people kept singing? If a Friday night service is announced are you more likely to attend if it’s a singing over a night of preaching? It’s that preaching that saved us! 1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Why then would we not still see the importance of preaching? This world has many churches that are more interested in teaching and tickling ears than they are in preaching the truth. I’m thankful we have a church that preaches the Word! Thankful for a pastor that gives us the truth from the Word. However, if we take it for granted or begin to not place it in its proper spot we could soon find ourselves missing the preaching! How important is the preaching of the Word to you?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
