Isaiah 50:6-7
6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
This a prophecy concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. He was scourged and mocked before he went to Calvary to die on the cross. It says that he “set my face like a flint”. This phrase refers to the focus and determination to complete what Jesus came to do. He came to do the will of the Father. He came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10) and “to give his life a ransom” (Matthew 20:28) so that he could pay for man’s sin debt. His determination was hard set, and nothing would keep him from it. He would overcome every obstacle to complete the will of the Father.
It seems that today there is not much of this “like a flint” determination. People are easily offended, distracted, defeated, and (after a little emotional excitement) seem to lose interest. There was a time when they knew the direction they were going was right, but something happened to stifle their progress. Jesus spoke of this in Matthew 13.
Matthew 13:18-22
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
Let us get as close to God as we can so that we will have this determined “like a flint” attitude and go forward to the glory of God. Revival is true revival when it redirects our walk with the Lord and refocuses our lives to give him preeminence. Real revival continues after a meeting and becomes a way of living. Let us be “like a flint”.
